I believe that it is important to engage in regular professional development, to keep my skills fresh and take on board new ideas.
Music teaching is an unregulated industry in Australia, and does not require minimal educational or ongoing PD. However, I was an active member of the West Australian Music Teachers’ Association until 2025, before founding the WA Music Education Network later that year. I regularly organised and participated in professional development through WAMTA, and now do the same through WA Music Ed. I also regularly attend professional development provided by external providers, to access a wide range of ideas.
Professional Development Presenter
In recent years I have been a presenter of a variety of workshops, through WAMTA, the AMEB, and the WA Music Education Network. The main topics I present about are the Rockschool examination syllabus and how to prepare students for it, video examinations, and marketing for music teachers.
I’ve not posted about all of the workshops I have presented here on my website. The ones I have posted about include:
- Rockschool workshops for the AMEB and WAMTA in 2021 (I presented an updated workshop to WAMTA in May 2024)
- workshop at the WA Piano Pedagogy Conference, in 2021.
Workshops I have presented for WAMTA in 2023 and 2024 are available as on-demand recordings.
I have monthly webinars lined up to present through the WA Music Education Network in 2026. Recordings will be made available to watch back on-demand.

A selection of my professional development certificates are available below. Not all workshops I have attended have provided certificates, eg the 5 week “Safe & Healthy Music Teaching” course I participated in 2021 didn’t provide a certificate; the Queensland Music Teachers’ Association does not provide PD certificates for virtual attendees to their workshops, and there have been many others held at music stores that have not provided certificates of attendance either.
